"The cardinal and priests of the archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh were stunned this morning to hear of the sudden death of Right Reverend Monsignor David Gemmell, Administrator of St Mary's Cathedral in Edinburgh."
Carrying the light of the love of Jesus Christ
"The lamp of David’s life on earth has been put out. It is now up to each one of us to realise that the life that he lived and handed on to us has not been extinguished – we must carry that same light of the love of Jesus Christ wherever we are continuing that Christlike apostolate of love which has so moved so many in so many different ways here in our midst."

A spokesperson for Celtic Football Club said: “Clearly, we are stunned by the sudden passing of Monsignor Gemmell, a man who was a great supporter of Celtic and someone well known to the club.
“The thoughts of everyone at Celtic are with Monsignor Gemmell's relatives, friends, colleagues and congregation at this very difficult time.”
I met David Gemmell whilst I was a pupil at St. Tam's in Edinburgh. I must say he made quite an impression on me, he was an honest, sincere, happy & inspiring man and I was so saddened to hear the news, rest in peace, you will be sorely missed.
Kirsty.
We are stunned and saddened at the news of Father David's passing. Upon our arrival in Edinburgh, he welcomed us into the St Mary's family like we were family. He had this way of getting us involved when we might not ordinarily do so, but found ourselves involved happily anyway. We would do anything for him! He told me he liked to hike Arthur's Seat in the mornings to watch the sun rise and pray. I often think of him doing that. My son and I would go to 7am mass before rugby matches and Father David would smile at us from the altar, knowing we were bearly awake. We still smile remembering some of things he said, those Sunday mornings at mass, or the few experiences we had with him.
We will miss him greatly. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. We've lost a truly great man.
